This is an ugly Spider-Man book.  When the cover first surface in Previews a few months ago, everyone I worked with was certain that the Spider-Man head on the cover was a place holder.  Clearly no one thought Spidey’s  head should look like that.  Oh, were we wrong.  Not only is that ridiculous fishbowl of a head on the cover, it appears to be the new status quo in the interiors.  And it’s just not cool looking.  The eye patches take up about 75% of the face, and the head is a perfect sphere.  As though Peter Parker was replace by Charlie Brown.  Shenanigans,  David Lafuente, shenanigans!

But, while the all-important Spiderhead is a total fuckjob, the rest of the art in the issue, while a tad Runaways/maga-esque, fits the mood very well.

And, while Bendis has been losing me on his Dark Reign titles, he is still all up in Ultimate Spider-Man.  A great set-up  (Peter Parker is flipping burgers to make money), a fun premise, and a bad-ass ending.  If they could just fix the head on that damned costume, this might be a contender for my pick of the week.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good
