OK, so we can officially stop calling Fabian's story's "back-ups." Apparently they will actually be weaved in and out of Busiek's and that is just plain greatness. I don't have to feel like I am paying full price for a comic I may end up only caring about a part of the story (Countdown to Adventure and Countdown Prime I'm lookin' at you).
The name of the issue, "A Personal Best At Giant Robot Smashing," solicited a chuckle, and from then on the story switched effortlessly between serious moments of heroism and humor.
I do have to ask if this is one of those comics i'm supposed to show a parent or teacher and say "See, comics can be educational." Superman's Solar System Science could be a great Saturday morning show in the vein of Beakman's World or Bill Nye. Seriously though, between Clark and GL John I feel like I'm ready for my first quiz in astronomy class.
One thing that did bug me was the pretty blatant rip-off of the giant robots designs. They bare much more than just a passing resemblance to the Phalanx from Marvel's Annihilation Conquest, and seem to have the same speech patterns and motives as they did as well. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a shot or not. I mean seeing as how Wonder Woman easily beat them down singlehandedly and it took the entire Marvel cosmic cast to beat the phalanx, it just seems like an insult.
The art was also VERY uneven again. If you're going to have two artists doing the same character it would probably be best not to put full page shots of them just opposite of each other. It just really threw me for a second. Other than that a lot of the characters just didn't seem to be the same from panel to panel and page to page.
Other than that, I really had fun with this issue. I saw that's what somebody else gave as a reason for reading Booster Gold and I would have to recommend this as well to anyone who just wants a fun and engaging storyline. The pacing seems pretty right on for a weekly so far and just like last week I can't wait for the next issue.
