Trinity reminds me of Howard Stern. Bare with me this may take a minute. When Howard Stern left terrestrial radio CBS/Viacom had to find somebody to replace the most well known radio celebrity of all time. Anybody who came after was going to be compared to Stern and most of his fans would probably take it out on the new host. So what did they do? They purposely picked someone with such a glaring lack of talk show talent, David Lee Roth, and stuck him in the chair for about 5 or 6 months. Then, after the hate from Sterns leaving had died down, replaced Roth with their real choice, Opie and Anthony.
So I guess Trinity is really Opie and Anthony. 52 left such a wonderful taste in everyones mouth DC didn't know how to really capitalize on it's success. While I don't think they meant to have Countdown suck so very very hard and taste like overcooked spam, that is what happened.
Enter Trinity. While a first issue is WAY too early to call a 52 issue weekly series good or bad, you can judge it on a first issue scale. Saying this, I can't wait until next Wednesday. I haven't looked to see what comes out next week but I know I'm buying Trinity.
As Ron, Josh and Connor have said many times over people should write the Trinity (specifically Superman) like real people, and here Busiek succeeds. Bruce is a coffee princess, Clark a humble guy who just wants some old fashioned pancakes, and Diana is a simple, polite woman who just wants a cup a joe.
All in all the set-up was good, and the back up story with Margaine La Fey and Enigma (Riddler?) teaming up and recruiting Despero to be the Yin to the Trinity's Yang was very wordy, but interesting at the same time. The implied tie to the tarot cards was interesting and I hope it gets some more attention soon. I definitely prefer this back-up story to the bio's that came in 52 and Countdown.
I do have to grade the art down for the inconsistencies in the back-up story. While I understand their trying to keep the same team on these and they do have to rush, I hope we can find a "sweet spot" between time and quality.
I'll still keep a wait and see attitude, but for right now DC has my money... at least for next week.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
Nice review Zeno. This series intrigues me, but I just can’t buy a weekly series. If the quality stays the same, I may be forced to pick this up. Keep us posted.
I liked this first issue too. I wanted more but since it’s a weekly book I can’t expect to get a heaping amount of content every single issue and I’ll keep on this title for a while.
I agree 100% Zeno, I’ll continue to pick this one up as long as Trinity runs. I’m kinda addicted to WW.
I wanted more of the first story, which should be the goal of a weekly series, and the backup (while the art could improve) got my interest piqued as well. I’m not much of a Morgaine LeFey lover, but she was written so well, and her dumb kid isn’t hanging around (although he’s very precocious) I think I’m very excited about where this is going to go.
Story 4 very good, Bagley’s art 4.5 (I’m not loving Diana’s chin, but I’ll live), backup McDaniel/Owens art 3
That’s a really good way to look at it. I read 52 in trade (loved loved) and skipped Countdown — except for a few odd issues I picked up for characters I was interested in, and always got frustrated by how choppy the story was. So I’m ready to give this one a shot, and I liked the way it started out. The getting-coffee scene was a great way to characterize them, as was all three of them having basically the same dream (I wouldn’t be surprised if it was EXACTLY the same dream) and interpreting it differently. I’ll give at least the first few issues of this a try because I *want* to like the Trinity characters, I just don’t feel like I’ve had the right ‘in’ for them yet.
I was wondering if we were supposed to KNOW who the guy was in the backup story. The name made me think of Riddler, but he didn’t seem Riddler-like otherwise? I don’t know Eddie’s characterization that well, though. So is it him, or his identity supposed to be a mystery? But we can see half his face. (I thought he looked like Guy Gardner with better hair but that makes even LESS sense than Riddler.
