There’s been a lot of ballyhoo around the original Human Torch lately and, although I’m not automatically excited by the Marvel Golden Age porn that’s been coming around so frequently as of late, I thought I’d give this a shot. The main problem is that this is not at all what I expected. This is a story more about Toro than Jim Hammond. It’s set in modern day, rather than in the WWII era. It’s probable that this series will eventually fall in to more of what I, and likely some others, had predicted what it would be but I don’t think I’ll be around for it. Having a comic come out on a slow week is no excuse for engaging something fairly middle-of-the-road for 8 issues. While the art is good enough, the dialogue seems heavy-handed (I’m looking at you, Ross) and the reveal at the end effectively undoes (or at least cheapens the meaning) of a recent Captain America story arc. But in the end, how interesting that I wasn’t sure if I would be interested in this kind of story, only to find out it was not -that- kind of story at all… and still find this to be something that’s just not for me. I guess graverobbing just isn’t the same without Batroc the Leaper.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Shame this was average at best. Usually a story with Alex Ross involved is good. But if you want to see a great use of the original Human Torch; go read ‘Human Torch Comics 70th Anniversary’. It’s one of the many Anniversary issues Marvel has been doing.
