Well chalk me up as being surprised. I had no idea how much enjoyment I would have on this new volume of Thunderbolts. I like Daniel Way and I love Steve Dillon but I was a bit hesitant to pull this. Partly because Marvel is eating a lot into my wallet but mostly because these two had big shoes to fill. Jeff Parker with Kev Walker and Declan Shalvey revived this series to its former glory for a good two years. So just looking at the line up on this cover shows the news guys need to make this even remotely interesting to keep me reading.
This is a very simple issue, almost by the numbers for a Marvel book. All this is issue is showing Thunderbolt Ross (aka Red Hulk) going around the world getting his team together with Punisher being the central character. We get a lot of insight into how Punisher will tick with Daniel Way and I love how he is going to be Ross’s most trusted soldier. Way has a goldmine here of characterization if this is hoe he centers this new run. You get some nice moments with Elektra, Deadpool (ironically no jokes with him considering Way’s history with him), and Venom. But we don’t get much with them except for a page or two. I’m sure we’ll get more of these people next month. As it stands this is a fun issue to read and at least we know Way has a handle on Rulk and Castle.
If only Way could put more cursing into his script, cause otherwise this is a MAX book thanks to Dillon’s art. He does not hold back on the violence so he is perfect for a book involving the most violent characters at Marvel. The blood has the consistency of molasses for god sakes (and there’s A LOT of blood here). Plus it certainly helps that Dillon is used to drawing a good portion of these characters already. He’s drawn Punisher, and Elektra, and Deadpool so it’s par for the course when it comes to them. You get the problem of similar faces with some of the panels and Eddie Brock looks like a generic blond. But this issue already showcases why Dillon is perfect for a book like this.
I’m not saying this is the best book for Marvel’s relaunch but it is definitely the biggest surprise for me. Daniel Way has a great handle of these characters and if this introduction is any indication then we’re gonna get some great moments with Punisher and Red Hulk. Another great choice was to have Steve Dillon do the art because he can do the nasty with the gunplay and gore. After reading this issue all I can think of, other then deciding to stick with it, is that: ‘Wow, what a perfect pair these two make.’
