Like watching good early Spielberg, you’ve just begun to settle into a decent story with a handful of engaging characters, while some tension maybe starts to build up in the background… when suddenly the WHOLE FUCKING THING BLOWS UP and shit’s flying everywhere and characters are being torn apart and you’ve got what would be, in a conventional blockbuster, a mega-million-dollar climax in your lap, all before you’re a third of the way through your popcorn.

Brilliant. Engaging. Surprising. The hallucinations the characters experience before being savagely slaughtered deeply disturb my fragile psychology. Jump-cuts across 3.1 billion years of our solar system’s history make my belly flip with excitement at the epic context being formed around of this tight little underwater-survival-horror tale.
The Snyder/Murphy team is stellar on the American Vampire minis… but this is something else entirely.
