Killjoys is a delightful cavity. It’s sugar soaked, color coated, vibrant entertainment at its best.

I’m really digging the amount of high concept science fiction tales that are being told right now in comics. It’s a department in which the industry is completely trumping Hollywood (no wonder the stream of big screen adaptations at the moment).

If you’re a fan of Umbrella Academy and are looking for something to satisfy that sweet tooth, or even just a casual comic reader in search of something new, than look no farther. While sometimes poetically over-indulgent, this first issue is a great start to what’s shaping up to be a memorable miniseries.

The story is snappy and cool from the get-go. But Cloonan’s art is the real star here, and in combination with the beautiful colors it feels like I’m robbing them at just $3.99. You can tell that this belongs to a much larger world that’s been mapped out way beyond the glimpses that we’ve gotten. And I couldn’t be more excited to start exploring.

You don’t need to have any experience with the material from MCR’s album, or even an appreciation for their music. Way’s writing transcends any preconceptions and offers a unique and ultimately satisfying story that is only at its opening.

It’s so focused and stylistic that there’s bound to be a little something for everyone. And if you enjoy it, I implore you to check out both volumes of Umbrella Academy. They’re a triumph in creativity, and the medium itself. And hopefully the popularity of this leads down the road to volume 3.
