Even though my father loved listening to the radio shows, I’ve never been a huge fan of The Shadow. I am, though, a huge fan of Garth Ennis. I trust the brain that came up with both Battlefields and The Crossed to be able to write just about anything.

Sadly, the first issue of The Shadow didn’t grab me. This is through no fault of the writing, nor Campbell’s art. It just wasn’t enough to transcend from The Shadow comic to Garth Ennis comic. It will probably go over very well with The Shadow fans (it’s more Battlefields language than The Boys) but I don’t know if it’s enough to pull Ennis’s fanbase in.

And, yes, I meant to give the issue four stars. Just because something isn’t for me, doesn’t mean it isn’t good.

  1. They still release those old time radio shows. I remember working at Borders a co-worker personally ordered an audio tape of old, Shadow shows from the 1920s-1930s.

    • archive.org, and if you have an Android device, Old Time Radio on the market! I listen to a lot of that stuff. X Minus One is great!

    • i got a whole bunch of mp3’s of those old radio shows years ago from some public domain site..may have been archive.org. Either way, they were fun to listen to on my old commute…especially coming home at night. heh

    • @Firevine Thanx for the links, I think listening to some of that old stuff might be relaxing at times and with that pulp nostalgia feel.

    • Lots of Shadow radio avilable for free via podcasts on iTunes. Love the old radio shows!

  2. When I worked at the old comic book store, I had a coworker who would sit in the office all day listening to the CD and cassette releases of old time radio. In four years, I don’t think I ever heard him listen to any music, or anything written after 1950.
