In the interest of full disclosure I haven't read a lot of Hawkman in the past, so I'm not sure how this book measures up in relation to its predecessors. Nevertheless, as a stand-alone effort I can offer my two-cents I figure. Story opens with Carter Hall (aka Hawkman) basically ditching the wings and whatnot that give him his powers. For some reason, he's had enough of the life of a hero, so he buries the wings, only to have the burial end in a ball of fire. Is his dead? No way. He wakes up a short time later, shirtless in his apartment, uncertain how he got there. As cryptologist by trade, he's then called to the labs where he works for the unveiling of a new discovery, namely an alien pod of some sort that seems to contain an alien mummy. Predictably, the pod comes to life and a nasty alien blob thing emerges. Not good. His name? A decidedly corny Morphicius (because he morphs into multiple evil aliens). Carter fights the alien, well aware that it might kill him since he's no longer Hawkman. Luckily, Carter's wings and powers reemerge during the battle. He's Hawkmen whether he likes it or not. It's pretty basic stuff. No real surprises here. Hopefully in later issues we'll get a better sense of why Carter wanted to get rid of his wings and why they come back to him even when he's not wearing his gear. As for the villain we're presented with in this relaunch, an alien blob like deal feels somewhat uninventive. It remains to be seen if the baddy will get more interesting, but at this point, it feels pretty lame in its conception and its depiction in Tan's art. Not likely to pick this one up again.
