I came into this mini-series hoping for a lot of time-traveling X-wing action, and left glad that I didn’t get what I wanted. Not because I’m a comics masochist, but because what Hickman delivered was far more interesting and satisfying than the dippy adventure story I imagined.

The whole series has been somewhat expressionistic, and the final issue brings that emphasis on feeling and theme to a head – the revelation about Dom and his father in the final pages is particularly moving. The Red Wing felt very personal, as if maybe Hickman is working out some anxiety about fatherhood (does he have kids? I dunno.) I certainly responded to the notions of guilt of responsibility, which I wouldn’t have expected from a fighter pilot comic.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
