The first of DC's Third Wave picks up from the glimpse we got of Pandora's past back in the FREE COMIC BOOK DAY issue. The first half of this issue is origin for the Phantom Stranger, another third of the "Trinity of Sin" with Pandora and another, who the FCB book sort of implied would be the DCnU Question. But those are mysteries for another day, perhaps.
The Stranger has a long road to walk to atone for his sins, and that could be an interesting journey. I see the ongoing series potential here, but it's going to be tricky to really make it pay off and survive. The Stranger, by nature, must help others help themselves, which means this could (fittingly, given the Stranger's publication history) operate very much like an anthology series. That could be a really nice way to go, too, an opportunity to deal with people in the DCnU who aren't superpowered and don't necessarily have anything to do with those who are.
That said, it'll obviously have to delve into the mystical corner of the DCnU to which the Stranger has always belonged - and, here, more than just the origin story accomplishes that. The Stranger's not the only classic DC character that gets added to the DCnU in this issue.
The art and writing are both quite good, though as with many origin stories there are bits that drag a little in the name of establishing the character and where he fits. It's not the best origin issue out there. But it is good, and it is something a bit different from a lot of other stuff the DCnU has to offer right now - I'll be back for #1.

I thought it was pretty decent. Plus it brought back the Spectre… nuff said.
