I just want to start with saying how
insanely amazing the art was in this. I thought it was just really good
at the start, but by the time the Torch lit up and was trying to wave
people away? My god, just gorgeous stuff, simply breath taking.
I don't know how to describe Brubaker's writing. I mean he is unbelievably talented, but his style has more dimension than just straight up noir, which is what he gets labeled as more often than not. There is just a rich tapestry to what he writes and how he writes it.
It's different from Johns, who often feels like a fan writing the stories he wants. Brubaker instead comes off as though he appreciates the character but is just as likely to have someone shoot them in the face as give them a present for their birthday. It makes the beats of the story a little harder to read and predict.
The really great thing about this story is the main character. Obviously spoiler if you're not a huge marvel nerd. The main character is the guy that was the Golden Age Angel. I honestly have no idea what happened to him, and the only time I remember reading about him was in X-Men Noir, but damn, he's riveting here. He's like Batman's dad or something.
I love the little things in this issue, like young Fury or expanding Dr. Erksine's back story. I'm curious how many people caught Steve in the movie theater.
This was set up, but also a lot of pay off, which again, I think is something Johns trades off on.
The last time I felt such interest and awe at golden age characters was when I picked up the first issue of Marvels when I was 13. This issue may be darker, but it is just as amazing.

Story: 5 - Excellent

Good insight into the differences between Brubaker and Johns. I haven’t read this issue but will probably read the whole series at once whenever it’s completed.
thanks. I was worried I didn’t make any sense when describing Bru’s take
did you see the main character at all in this issue? i’m not very up on my Marvel characters so I probably missed that.
I assumed that Dr Holloway was the main character
"just as likely to have someone shoot them in the face as give them a present for their birthday"
Very accurate way of describing Brubaker’s style. Well done.
