Sometimes comics end up perpetuating some of the worst gender stereotypes, so it always nice when a book comes along that bucks these trends. Huntress #1 takes place in present-day Italy with Prime Minister Berlusconi at the helm. There, our protagonist gets a tip that there is illegal activity going on at a shipyard: someone is trying to smuggle women and guns into Gotham. Relative to the more extravagant crimes and settings pervasive in comics, such a story may seem banal. Still, in a world where Berlusconi's Bunga Bungas are a reality, stories that expose the ludicrousness of how some women are treated are necessary, if only to snap us out of a lull of complacency and desensitization. Levitz threads the theme of waste throughout the book by equating actual refuse with spilled wine and human life, thereby conveying absurdity through hyperbole.
Marcus To's depiction of women as beautiful and reasonably proportioned (for comics) was appropriate and appreciated. It would have been a travesty and a blow to the creative team's credibility if a plot focused on the denigration of women was accompanied by art that objectified women. To's portrayal of movement during the action sequences is wonderfully realistic, while Dalhouse's colors are true to life. Both To and Dalhouse reinforce the realism in this book, thereby strengthening the core thematic elements of Levitz's story.
