Jesus fuck, Garth. An eleventh hour twist that I didn’t expect.

I know some people tuned out of this series a while ago. The reason I heard most often was that the series always seemed to go for the shock factor. I don’t find that to be true. I find that the shocking events in a Garth Ennis comic tend not to be to shock the reader but to get a reaction from the other characters in order to take the story in a different direction. For me, it works. It works in a way that, say, David Lapham’s shock tactics on his Crossed run, don’t.

I have no idea what Ennis has planned for the final arc of The Boys. If he’d ended it with this issue, I’d have been satisfied. Yet, I have faith that the remaining issues will be just as well told and character driven as the very first arc.

Artwise, this is a two artist book. And it’s a noticeable shift in art. So the art is divided between two stories. Personally, I liked Braun’s pencils more, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t also enjoy Mcrea and Burns.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
