If you think you know all their is to know about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles think again. In this reboot published by IDW the turtles entire universe is flipped upside down.

In this iteration the Turtles and Splinter have a bit more history to be explained, like the visions Leonardo is having. In the mean time Baxter Stockman has teamed up with a mutant alley cat named Old Hob and is developing weapons for Krang. Plus Leonardo thinks he saw some Foot Soldiers back in issue #6… Casey Jones and April O’Neil have an agreement in the works, he teaches her to fight she tutors him in English. The banter between these two is cute enough to make you want to hear more and tailored perfectly for the universe.

That said Eastman and Waltz do a great job of creating a deeper story while remaining true to the characters themselves. Michelangelo is a still a beach bomb, Raphael is still the wise cracking, sarcastic New Yorker, Leonardo is as serious as ever and Donatello is…a nerd! If you know these characters well enough there’s a good chance that the dialogue will get a little predictable, but if you like nostalgic trips this is not such a bad thing.

Dan’s sequentials are excellent. Action sequences convey a sense of explosive speed, while dialogue sequences exploit the angles that best convey the emotion of the characters. On top of all of that, the way he draws the Turtles is simply brilliant.

Great series so far cant wait for the next issue!
