We’re on the third issue (damn zero issues messing this up!) of this new series and so far I have become a fan. Thanks to Scott Snyder we have been introduced to a new writer in James Tynion IV. In my mind he is a great find for DC Comics and hopefully he will someday be another ‘A’ list writer for the company. Now that we have the exposition out of the way we can finally get started on this big adventure on getting rid of the Talons.

First off we got a huge shocker for this particular issue. Instead of having Guillem March do the interiors we have newly acquisition Juan Jose Ryp to do the deed. While it is a surprise it isn’t a disappointing surprise as I am a big fan of his work. It is a bit tough to have a consistency with the characters with a new artist. But it is hard to complain when you get some top notch detail into these panels. I could be lost for days on some of these layouts of the Talons secret headquarters. There’s one double page spread involving an explosion that is just….well ‘orgasmic’ is the only word I could think of.

I do like how Tynion just jumps into this heist with explanation as he fights his way through. Gets through some of the monotonous of starting the issue with exposition. There are still some massive word balloons in here but I am willing to give Tynion the benefit of the doubt considering he is still new to this thing. We do learn a lot more about Sebastian Clark in this issue and clearly there is more to him then just being a benefactor for Calvin. Hopefully the various Talons both will face will be just as fascinating as what we’ve seen so far. This month’s antagonist had a pretty brutal back story (#2 brutal issue of the week) and it is a shame we won’t be seeing more of him. Overall, a nice step up from last month’s issue and clearly Tynion is improving with each new issue.

Two great things about this issue:

1) James Tynion IV is improving with each issue and this is a pretty solid read from start to finish.
2) Juan Jose Ryp fills in for Guillem March and I kinda wished we got more of his work on this title. Definitely one of the best looking books on the stand this week thanks to Ryp.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Couldn’t agree more, I’d love to see Ryp take over art duties for this.
