I’ve been saying lately that: ‘Sweet Tooth is THE best comic series out today’. Maybe there’s a bit too much hyperbole in that, but I fully believe it. Jeff Lemire has made this odd little comic into one of the must gut-wrenching and beatufiul comics to read. Not even a similar series with Walking Dead have I felt this many emotions in a comic.

This issue is not my pick but that doesn’t mean it’s a downgrade. This still is an enjoyable read even if it is a slow burn. Learning more of Jepperd’s past is a good thing and I am definitely finding more reasons to like him…or at least stand him more. We get little taste of the world before this apocolyptic scenario and I’m all for that. Then we continue with Gus and what could be the cruelest thing we’ll see done to a kid in a comic. We’ve seen that panel of Gus screaming with a needle near him, but that page still gives me the creeps.

The artwork by Lemire continues to amazing me. My inital reaction is always: ‘This is too sketchy for my tastes’. But then I look at the panels (or just whole pages at points) and see just how much detail he puts into each panels. Jeppered walking away from his old home, or seeing this new city, or just characters in general; all have this unqiue look to them. It seems like he tricks you at first then he reels you into the experience. I mean look at that cover! It looks simple but then you notice how detailed the fence is and it gives off a 3-D like effect….Basically that cover tells me all I need to know how great Lemire is.

I decided not to give this my pick because the end was a bit….well obvious. I question where Lemire is gonna go with that part of the story cause we know full well what happens to these characters in the past. But Lemire has continued to amazing and surprise us with these past seven issues. I’m sure he has some twists to give us in this somewhat ‘obvious’ left turn. I’m damn sure of it.

Story: 4 - Very Good
