Remember when Battlestar Galactica ended and we all freaked out? “Six really might have been an angel? Bullshit.” “Starbuck was also possibly kind of an angel? Bullshit.” A lot of fans were angry that what they saw as a gritty, realistic sci-fi story took a supernatural twist that felt forced — even though you could see precursors to that twist from much, much earlier in the show. But that’s a story for another time.
Instead, haters, let me draw your attention to Sweet Tooth, a series that knows how to take a the hardest sci-fi genre there is — post-apocalyptic survivalism — and add supernatural spice in a way that feels satisfying, natural and really smart. We’ve gone beyond Thunderdome, as it were. Jeff Lemire’s little detour to 1911 is showing us the origin of both the plague and the hybrids, and it seems to involve … Ancient Spirits of Evil! (I’m sorry, I couldn’t look at that cave full of hybrid sarcophagi and not think of the ThunderCats.)
From the beginning, the supernatural side of this book has been hard to miss, but it’s mostly been confined to dream sequences and hallucinations. Now it seems to be kicking up a notch, and it helps that we have Matt Kindt’s moody, expressive art to change up the tone. This is a book that really conveys the desolation and magic of the North, right down to the Cape Dorset-y cover treatment of Gus as a mystical bird creature. It’s also a lot less wordy than the last issue, so if that bothered you, rest easy, friends.
Interesting and potentially magical things are likely to happen when our heroes get to Alaska. I’m looking forward to it. Because, really, all I want is life beyond Thunderdome.
