Sweet Tooth is a great series because it tries to innovate itself in every issue. Here we get a bit of a pause in the story to give us a bit of a backstory with some of the women involved with the story. Instead of it just being just another issue by Lemire, we have three other creative indie talents put to the test in this issue. It’s a great way to show some of their talents to a more mainstream audience. It also looks like they had a hand on the writing duties for their stories as well. I guess a patent pending ‘TNC PELLET REVIEWS’ can suffice here.

Jeff Lemire: I’m breaking these down by creators and not story because essentially they all blend together for a single issue. For the pages Lemire writes and draws it’s what you suspect. It’s gorgeous to look at and he does a great job fleshing out these characters. We haven’t seen much of a focus on the female characters of this story yet so it’s a great idea in general to do this. His story also ends on a pretty good cliffhanger so I can’t wait to see where it goes. (Story/Art: 5/5)

Nate Powell: This puts the focus on Miss Lucy during the outbreak and I hate to say it’s the weakest of the three so early in the issue. It’s not that it’s bad in any way, but her backstory didn’t interest me as much as the other two. Other then the fact that Charlie Brown seems to be a meth addict in this universe which was hilariously drawn by Powell. I’m interested to see whether the people kidnapping her was the milita or not because Lemire (who wraps her story up) doesn’t make it quite clear. But the art in this is really good and I like Powell’s realistic style to it. Also his variation on panels, or lack there of, was an interesting choice too. Again not the best story out of the three but the art saves it. (Story: 2/5, Art: 5/5)

Emi Lenox: Now this is a creator I wanted to see more of. This story focuses on Beck and it has a weird Mike Allred, but sharper look to it. Everything looks so sharp and brightly colored but it has a surreal look to it like a Mike Allred comic. He also handles emotions pretty well, especially with the eyes. When you see a close up of Beck being scared, happy, or tired Lenox handles it perfectly. Again I’d love to see more of her work and her ‘kid’ like style of writing. (Story/Art: 5/5)

Matt Kindt: Now we have a creator I know pretty well and I love his crayon style. It really does look like he drew this with a crayon, which isn’t a negative mind you. But there is such a great attention to detail and his character designs are so well done. I especially love his take on Wendy, the pig girl, because it feels more natural then actually what Lemire draws. Plus when you get to that final image of a drawing Wendy made, it really is a heartbreaker. Well done by Kindt. (Story/Art: 5/5)

So it wasn’t all perfect but this issue really was great to read. We see indie creators take a jab at writing and drawing Sweet Tooth characters and they handle it all in their own distinctive way. I’d love to see all of these creators work again, especially with their own comics they created. If that was the goal of this issue then mission accomplished. Even if it wasn’t this is yet another example why Sweet Tooth is one of the best comics on the stands today. Taking risks and executing them perfectly.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
