Huzzah! An issue involving Jepperd I actually care about!

Hearing that Lemire was quickly going back to Jepperd had me a bit disappointed. The last issue was so amazing artistically that going back to the suicidal old man seemed a bit unwanted. If you haven’t been reading this series lately trust me, Jepperd is the last person you want to see again.

However, Lemire didn’t really go back to the well of the ‘woe as me’ human being but actually showed what happened to him and his wife so long ago. It was tense and sometimes action packed and it was a nice change of past to the previous issues. It’s been so long I forgot that Jepperd can pretty much kill everyone in the room Brock Sampson style. Although I call major bullshit that a guy like Abbot can do any type of damage up against a guy like Jepperd. Like Walking Dead though, this had enough tension and unease to make me flip the page with anticipation. When we get to the end, which by the way doesn’t feel like the end of Book 2, I can’t wait to see how Jepperd will get back at the government.

A really great framing device with the lights in this. Everytime we see the passage of time a light is switched on and off. It keeps showing us just how different this book really is in comparison to others. I don’t think many artists would do that inbetween panels and would just transition from one page to the next. Next to Chew, I still find this to be one of the most gorgeous comics to come out month after month. Not with his style, but HOW he composes a page.

So this was a real good surprise for me. I ended up caring more about Jepperd which is a good thing, since the longest time he has been a stick in the mud. With more unique takes of artwork in Lemire’s pages; this is still a must read book every single month. Reading this in issues has been a bit tough, but the rewards have been many. Bring on Book #3!
