How good is this comic?

Let me put it like this: I wasn’t a Swamp Thing fan or even a fan of horror comics. So why did I pick up this title when it started? Two reasons: Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette. They pulled me in and with issue four (though not drawn by Paquette), I know I’m along for the ride.

Though my prior knowledge of Swamp Thing is limited, my enjoyment of this book certainly isn’t. Snyder has brought me up to speed with Alec Holland via the past that’s haunting him, both in the physical world and beyond. But it’s more than the past. The nature rot is explained in detail in this issue… and it’s utterly terrifying. And equally brilliant. I can’t believe I haven’t read something like that before. Floored.

And speaking of floored, if I can’t have the awesome Yanick Paquette on this title, I sure want Marco Rudy there. Every page is unique and detailed. Every panel is broken apart in a way that draws the eye. My favourite panel in the book? Check out the one where Alec and Abby are lying face to face in the field. Wow.

What’s even more impressive about this particular issue is that even though there are three inkers working on it, nothing feels disjointed.

This book is like a perfect horror movie; the suspense builds, there is a sense of menace throughout, there’s creepiness galore and when there is action, it’s fast and brutal.

One of the best comics of the new 52. Heck, one of the best comics period.
