Last issue of Swamp Thing was not terrible, but definitely suffered from a bit too much exposition within the pages. Exposition is very handy for a series like this because let’s face it, no one wanted to use this character except for Alan Moore. So with all of this ‘blah blah’ from me on the previous issue, what did I think about this?

Definitely a 100% improvement with this issue by probably being the best issue of the run so far. Right off the bat let me say that the kid in this issue is truly terrifying. Why is Scott Snyder so damn good at writing some truly fucked up moments, especially with kids? I mean you got possessed fish, a cancer patient getting (presumably I believe) tumors all over his body, a man’s lungs coming out of his mouth. Everything’s here! Snyder also continues the story with Alec Holland and here the info dump is definitely needed and paced beautifully. I haven’t read anything with Abigail since the Alan Moore run so it’s nice to get a refresher on her origin again.

Also, it was nice to see two different artists used in a book and it wasn’t a problem at all. Yanick Paquette is listed on the cover but for some reason DC decided not to credit Victor Ibanez, who did the majority of the issue really. It was drawn, inked, and colored so consistently that I didn’t even notice it until the credits at the end. Bottom line: considering how bad the Action Comics pages looked this week, it was refreshing to see how good these pages were.

I had no worries that this issue was going to be like before. Scott Snyder never misses a beat and even if he does, you know he’s got some disturbing stuff on his sleeve to tell a great story. This issue was genuinely scary, fun to read, and had some beautiful art to boot. If the book continues to be this great then it’ll definitely be one of, if not already, the best books DC has to offer for the new 52.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
