This is a book with lofty aspirations which in some senses it fulfills completely ; the bombastic sense of large scale heroism which should be synonymous with Superman is here in abundance. Lee’s art has energy and vitality and imbues the characterization with a sense of awe and ambition which we have come to expect of a superman tale. Snyder’s plotting and dialogue diverge from the psychoanalytical style of Batman to something no less entertaining ; a lighter tone with broad strokes of drama and tension which suits the character perfectly. What ultimately holds this book back is issue of exploring the character with the kind of detail and subtlety seen in Snyder’s other work. Ultimately this is a very strong beginning to a title which I hope achieves the promise of a renaissance of Superman as a character in the comic book medium . Highly enjoyable.
