Comics aren’t cheap. For about three dollars more than this issue of Superman I could get a paperback novel that would last me much longer than a trip the restroom. Japanese manga tends to have a better value as well. I buy comics for my favorite characters, of course, but more than that, I buy it for the art. Jim Lee is one of the best. His attention to detail his superman design sold me since Superman’s first appearance in the new 52 in Justice League #1. The poster idea was terrible, I won’t disagree with anyone on that. However, his take on superman is fresh and exciting. I don’t get the complaints that Lee’s superman isn’t “our superman”. I got into comics because of the new 52, so Lee’s superman is my superman, and many others who are, or want to get into comics. One of the most popular questions I get when talking about Supes is “does he still wear those dopey trunks?” No, and thank God. I can easily show someone this issue of superman, or Justice league and get the “wow, he looks badass” comment. Its time to retire grandpa superman with the silly red underwear and embrace the new.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Yeah I don’t see how anyone can defend the red trunks. I don’t hate them, but it’s the 21st century, it’s time to stop putting them on Superman. I noticed you didn’t talk about Snyder’s writing on this issue, why is that? I know you gave the story 5 stars but what did you like about it? Just curious.

    • Thanks for the comment. I should have included Snyder’s writing in my review, the point I was trying to make was this comic had great art, especially for new readers. Snyder had Superman’s voice perfectly, the premise of a second super man had me interested in the story. Just like issue zero, the story of the first issue in Snyder’s arcs don’t always blow my mind, but catch my interest because I know the story will be big and exciting with each following book.

    • Thanks for responding, I feel the same way about Snyder books. I’m hoping the next book will kick it up a notch. And I got your point about the art, it would be good at attracting new readers to Superman.
