I think Gary Frank’s work on this series has been overlooked, and that is quite an injustice. The characters in this book – from Superman to Lois to Lex to insignificant security guards to fat losers – are drawn with such detail. Look at the faces Lex makes throughout the book and you will have a lesson in how to but emotion in comic faces. It’s really amazing.

And of course, this art accompanies a fine story by “superwriter” Geoff Johns. I was skeptical when I heard we’d be getting another origin story for the most famous comic book character in the world, but Johns has not disappointed. The dynamics between all the characters – and in this one, particularly between Superman and Lex and Superman and Jimmy – have been great fun to follow, even if the tropes are familiar.

The only negative about this book? Seeing this Superman reminds me how much I miss Christopher Reeve.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
