Richard Donner is a man I find quite perplexing. In some ways he’s just another Hollywood director and is only that. But in other ways he really seems devoted to Superman, like an unhealthy relationship. Hell he spent a good part of his life making Superman II so close to his image that cause almost a supernova of controversey when he was finally done with it. Then, for some reason, DC thought it would be a good idea to have Donner help write a story with Geoff Johns….most likely thinking that it would make that series an incredible series again.

Well obviously it was a failure, this story is just waay to long winded and boring. Sure it’s nice to see Donner make Zod, The Phantom Zone, and others put into the comic world after the crisis…but he just doesnt seem to comprehend what is different about films and comics. Plus that whole 3-D gimmick just made it tiring to read, mainly cause the 3-D glasses didnt work for me. But nitpicks aside; the story is dull, the art is so-so, theirs gimmicks, and at the end of the day…it’s a waste of money.

But there has to be something good from all of this, something positive. Well, again, Geoff Johns was on this run. I’m not sure what the ratio of Donner’s writing is to Johns writing but considering how bad this is….I dont think John’s did much here. Even if he did do a lot, he mostly likely thought to himself: ‘Man I can write a better translation of the Superman films to comics. I can make Christopher Reeves immortal with my own run on Action Comics’. Well two issues after this long winded arc, Johns went with his ‘Legion’ story. Many critics praised from that moment on that Geoff Johns has made the perfect Superman comic with many references to the classic films. If Johns learned from his past mistakes, or saw mistakes by other writers, he definitely knew how to fix it….Thank god for DC keeping him around.

  1. I disagree with your 2-Story and 2-Art. The individual issues took way to long to come out, but the hardcover was amazing! I thought the art was really good, check the background details of buildings, cars,ETC…

  2. I don’t understand why you don’t like it. Can you give an example?

  3. @jupiter: Well overall I find the plot really stupid. What was Zod’s plan with the little kid? I’m sure he mentioned it in his very long monologues but since they’re all over the place….and drawn out, it got old wondering what his big plan was. Plus it was pretty much by the numbers for a Superman plot:

Superman is enjoying life-Something rocks his mythos and life-Lex Luthor gets involved-Big villian from the past is brought back-Superman is taking out of the picture for an issue-Superman comes back the next issue-Uhoh, Superman has to team up with his enemies-Superman wins in an easy fight.

*yawn* Sorry if you saw something different but to me this was just medicore at medicore bests. There’s no stand out moments, there’s no good lines or monologues, there’s really no good fighting, and overall it’s just a boring story. The only thing I really liked was the way Metallo was brought into the story. Instead of being just a robot I like he can somehow push the kryptonites into different parts of his body. Other then that, nothing special here.
