Having just started reading this title with the previous issue — a somber, Elseworlds-esque tale (or was it?) “team-up” between Thomas Wayne and Jor-El — I was surprised, but pleasantly so, to find that this month’s issue kicks off a rollicking, light-hearted romp in which Big Blue and the Dark Knight encounter miniature versions of themselves (as well as other familiar Justice Leaguers, from “A-listers” like Wonder Woman to supporting players like Vixen).  Although the “mystery” of how these tiny dopplegangers came to be will probably not challenge any long-time DC readers, the execution of the idea is everything in this fun-filled issue.  The characterizations of the kid characters are spot-on — my son (seven years old) especially enjoyed the fact that Supergirl’s sobs can shatter glass — and there are multiple “nods and winks” to more serious takes on DC’s icons.  The work of Frank Miller, from The Dark Knight Returns to All-Star Batman and Robin, particularly comes in for some good-natured ribbing.

My son and I can’t wait to see how this storyline resolves.  (And, as a dad, I’m grateful that this is the rare all-ages issue of an “adult” title that we can read together!)  Recommended.
