Superman 708 - Well, I'm a little conflicted on this.
Honestly, Some of the craft here feels a little bit amateurish, or at least I wasn't terribly compelled by the work on this book. Just some stiffness, a lack of momentum.
On the other hand, I absolutely ADORE the mentality that Roberson is bringing, the big, cosmic, sci-fi backdrop and influence stuff. The re-introduction of the Superman squad is brilliant. Finally, though, as a huge fan of the Green Lantern world/universe, I was almost a little offended at how blatant a rip off the introduction scene was of the old Alan Moore Green Lantern Corps stories. I mean, it's literally a character by character replication of that scene, (Even the order and the cadence is the same -- Mogo, sentient virus, sentient mathematical progression Green Lanterns are described vs Sentient Solar System (super star), sentient bacteria (super cilia) and sentient idea (super ego) Supermen).
But ultimately I just had so much god damn FUN with that scene, the big cosmic expansiveness of it, vibrating with DC continuity while constructing new continuity...Chris Roberson is very much writing the Superman run that I think I would write, were I a better writer. Not as creative or unique as Morrison, not as exciting or as effective as the better writers out there, but with an undeniable love of old school DC whimsy and fun, and with zero fear of exploiting and utilizing some of the 'bigger' aspects of the DCU mythology. I was grinning ear to ear for the entire first half of the issue.
The rest, super meh, though.

Loved the idea of a super-ego, that was my fave part.
There’s nothing amateurish about Barrow’s work to me, a great talent and was great to see him back.
