I can’t believe I’m about to write this…

…but this issue was pretty good!

Sure Lobdell relies a little too much on humor and everyone he writes loves to throw the puns around, but for some reason it worked this time out. I think it might have had something to do with Aaron Kuder’s art – it fit with Lobdell’s style better then Rocafort’s. Yeah, Kuder steals the show here in some pretty fantastic pages of the fight between Orion and Superman (the aircraft carrier page was glorious).

I go on a lot about the “Writers” in most of my reviews here so it was nice to be reminded that an artist can really make or break a comic.

I’m still not won over by Lobdell just yet, but this was a nice, fun issue that had me thinking for just a split second, “This could be my Pick Of The Week!” But then I came to my senses and gave that honor to Young Avengers #5 (have you read that issue yet? Fuckin’ awesome).

Anyway, this kinda makes for a nice “jumping on/back in” point for those of you who dropped this title way back when George Perez was assaulting our brains with one billion words per page.

Here’s hoping Superman can fight his way back into our hearts and POTW’s!

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Agreed. Aaron Kuder really made this whole issue work. Spot on review!

    • Hey thanks. It’s funny I’ve been barely hanging in there with this title, for some reason I just couldn’t bring myself to drop it. I guess it was just the only way to get my superman fix (I gave up on Action and Justice League didn’t seem to capture the character right for me). I hope this is the beginning of good things to come.

  2. You nailed my feelings with this issue… So far I just didn’t connect with the “Superman” title… not since Numer 1… So far pretty much everything was average or below.. this was the first issue I thought was fun and that was surprising since I thought #19 was incredibly bad… I was about to drop Superman for the first time in almost 20 years…

    SPOILER

I dunno, I wanna see more Diana in this book — I think it would be nice if we could see more of that relationship… so far imo we see glimpses here and there and I think that is way underrating this somehow obvious but still bold move to have them together and leave Lois on the side…

I just hope Lobdell now found it’s voice for this book and #20 is teh benchmark for things to come….

    • Like I said above, I was “this” close to dropping Superman, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it – I know, it’s sad. 😉

But yeah with this issue you can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel (and it’s not a train!)

  3. Easily the best issue of Superman in the new 52.
How is Hammond’s big glowing head on Superman’s body not in panels of the week?
