I feel like Scott Lobdell got hit over the head and suddenly learned how to write superman.

I was just dipping my toes into comics when the New 52 was announced so I decided to take the opportunity to dive in head first into the sea of capes and cowls.

One of the books I was most looking forward too was superman. I have always felt like Superman gets a bad name in this dark and edgy world we live in.

Boy was I wrong. 12 issues VERY long, rotating writers, and a book that was a straight up chore to get though every month had me ready to drop until I found out it would be crossing over with one of my secretly favorite books “Supergirl”.

After an enjoyable 0 issue I’m glad that Lobdell is finally writing the things I like about superman. Between the longing for Louis over her plans to move in with her boyfriend, and a stern talking too to the staff of the daily planet about how the news industry is a shadow of it’s former self. Combined with an enemy that actually poses a threat to superman (the biggest complaint people have about him)and insane and awesome silvery-age use of his powers. It feels like Lobdell is furiously striking a matchbook hoping to relight the love that readers should have for The Big Blue Boyscout.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I liked this as well. My only problem with Lobdell is that his dialog is terrible… particularly the Jerry Maguire rant.

    I love Rocafort’s art though.

    • See that’s what I loved. There is just something about Superman Giving someone a stern talking too that can always grab me. He even said it TRUTH JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY! He actually said that last part!

  2. Really liked this, my only problem was the amount of thought bubbles ….a massive improvement overall though!
