Given how recently we were introduced to the last Supergirl, I waver on whether a full re-telling of her origin is necessary. However with the DC relaunch I can understand why they chose to do so, and its hard not to like this re-telling, with its emphasis on being the proverbial "stranger in a strange land." While the art's not perfect, there are far more beautiful panels here then not. However, I dislike the red front piece in the costume redesign which just looks tacked on. Just make the red wrap around or stretch it further back on the hips. I do enjoy the way the cap wraps around at the neck though. In terms of the story itself, I waver between a 3 and a 4. It's good to see them try some new approaches to the powers both here and in Superboy. I like seeing her conflicted emotions playing out as she struggles to adapt. Her reactions to what Superman tells her feels very real. I do however, have a hard time investing in what appears to be the first major villain. Simon Tycho seems to be little more than a cheap Lex Luthor knock-off. The story places him as a 28 years old trillionaire. If this were the case, I feel like I'd see him more prominently throughout this new DCU Universe, but there doesn't appear to be much there to grab onto. I can't see this character being a major player in any other title, and I certainly can't imagine him running in the same circles as Bruce Wayne, Oliver Queen, Michael Holt (Mr. Terrific), or Lex Luthor. If they really had to go with an obsessed filthy rich collector with military/government contractor connections, it would have made far more sense just to use Lex, though admittedly that comes with its own set of baggage.
