With the big news on the DC reboot, the fate of Jeff Lemire being on this book seems to be doomed soon. With a few hiccups along the way, I have enjoyed Lemire’s run for the most part. He’s been able to tell a very interesting, personal story involving Connor Kent instead of going full out action in the book. Since the book is ending soon, it looks like Jeff Lemire is going to wrap everything up with this new threat: The Hollow Men. Also, Pier Gallo is back so that’s a win-win right there.

As far as I’m concern I would love for Jeff Lemire to do a secret history of Smallville comic. Like how Snyder and Higgins are doing ‘Gates of Gotham’; Lemire is giving us a small taste on how Smallville was like in the past. Those were the best moments for me in the book because: A) Lemire is great at writing westerns and B) He is good at the tension mixing a magic with a western. That isn’t to say that the stuff involving Superboy, Phantom Stranger, and others isn’t interesting. It’s just that I would’ve love to see more of this Smallville past. Also, Lemire seems to make Superboy sound a bit too ‘Golden Age Superboy’ if you know what I mean. It feels like he’s a child when he should be close to a grown adult at this point. (Also, let’s have a Phantom Stranger comic with Lemire)

People don’t seem too keen on Pier Gallo coming back. I, for one, am a fan of the man because like this book it’s not like the usual art for a Superman book. I’ve always said he reminds me of Juan Jose Ryp, but not going all ultra-violence on us. Just like Lemire himself, Gallo is great at laying out panels especially towards the end with the gang going down the underground cave. I think Gallo also handles the creepy vibe of the Stranger in a few pages, especially by making him a gang of crows as he moves about. It’s just a shame that Gallo never seems to be able to draw a consistant face for Connor this whole time.

With the end coming soon, Lemire definitely is building to something epic here. Whether it means Smallville is going to go postal is anyone’s guess, but I’ll be here to see how Lemire is going to handle it all. Also, I hope Pier Gallo is able to get more work once this book is over because he is a pretty damn good fine for DC. Maybe he could do a Jonah Hex issue one day with this western flashback? Anyways, it’s good to see Lemire be solid with a Superhero title since joining DC.
