You know what’s remarkable about this series after three issues? It’s almost nothing what you’d expect from a mainstream comic at this point. Jeff Lemire takes a character, who isn’t the biggest name in the DCU but still pretty integral, and pretty much makes his own take on the character be like anything else he’s written. If you read Essex County or Sweet Tooth, then you know what to expect from this title.

While Lemire showed in the first issue that he can definitely write a damn good fight, he shows in this issue why he is a damn fine writer. He just handles the characters so well whether it be from characterizations, narration, or constant conversations throughout. He nails the whole relationship with Ma Kent and Kid Flash with Connor and also with the new characters (that Johns helped created in Adventure Comics). This isn’t the most action packed series but Lemire keeps it all entertaining with the writing and when there is action it is pretty fun to read. Although for some reason I got a vibe of John’s new run on Flash with this issue as people from the future (who look like Time Cops) have to kill Superboy….Yeaahhh…

Pier Gallo’s art keeps getting better with each issue. The first two issues, Gallo seemed to have a hard time with faces (especially with Connor’s). Here though it’s such huge improvement and everything looks really great here. Again he is sort of Juan Jose Ryp-lite in terms of the detail with the characters and backgrounds. You won’t have gallons of blood on each page, but you’ll get some breathtaking pages of the landscape of Smallville. I really believe now that Smallville is a character (as Lemire put it) because Gallo puts so much time to make the scenery look so good. Then you have some great layouts like Ma and Connor talking to eachother, almost having a Lemire-like quality to creating each page.

This issue pretty much told me that this is going to be a great run for Lemire and Gallo. The first two issues, while still good, still seemed to be an experimenting period for both. For this issue everything just clicks and I’m really starting to love this series. It’s not like any other ‘Super’ book out there for DC which is a good thing. It might not be as action packed as you might expect, but it’s still pretty damn entertaining.

Comments

  1. I’m glad it’s good because it’s practically the only book I pulled this week except for Brightest Day

  2. I agree. The first two issues have been good, but it all comes together here. There is a lot to look toward to because of this issue. The relationships Conner has with Simon and Lori, (I won’t spoil the Lori thing. But will Cassie make appearances?) the Kid Flash race, time travel and the Psionic Lad.

    This series should be good.
