Namor is really a hard character to like, mainly because Marvel really doesnt spend time with him. Sure he's been in the Illuminati series, and some cameos in other Marvel books...but when was the last time Namor had any impact at all with the Marvel U? And no that little run during Civil War doesnt count cause nothing has really surfaced from that at all. Hell you would think with that last issue that would cause shockwaves with everyone...But no nothing has happenend after that.
This is way I have been looking forward to this series for two reasons. A) It's a Marvel Knights title so the likelyhood of this being good is very high. B) Esad Ribic might be my favorite artist now, like even better then Alex Ross. If I never read the fantastic, but overlooked, Silver Surfer: Requiem, then he would be the 'artist we dont talk about' topic for this site. His art is so damn good looking and realistic, that it's like looking at a work of art when you see a huge splash page.
With this story we see, I would believe, a 1950's world. Namor is just a myth and we follow a scientist trying to disprove the rumors that a city under the ocean exsists. Of course, previous missions has made others go insane, so god knows what could happen down there. It's very bold to have a first issue, let alone for a new series, not have the title character appear at all. We basically see the thoughts of this scientist and his crew and how they differ from fantasy creatures like Namor, or Bigfoot, or anything else along those lines. Overall I dont know where this story is going to take us, hell even the message for this series I dont know...But it's a good soild first issue and it definitely makes me want to see what happens next.
I picked this issue up for the characterization of Namor and the beautiful drawings of Ribic. Although, again, Namor is not in this issue, I can only image what Milligan has in store for us with this 'science vs fantasy' aspect for the plot. Even if this wasnt my POTW for a story, this would've been automatically my pick because of the fantastic art. Go flip threw it in your LCS, I dare you not to be amazed by the detail and colors used for this book.
Art: 5 - Excellent
Almost bought it but I had to get a new long box instead. Been putting it off for atleast a month and since it was a light week..
Anyway, I love the premise. So this is like Namor meets our world? Do other heroes exist?
That last mini-series actually fell under "The Initiative" banner. As much as I’ve searched to find out where Namor’s going to show up next (other than Hulk) I’ve found nothing, only that he’ll show up some time during Secret Invasion. Though, I’d almost rather he didn’t. When the Atlantean situation is moved forward I don’t want any distractions from dumbass skrulls.
I agree. Great book. Beautful art and I also like he science vs. fantasy aspect of the plot. It will probably end up being my pick of the week, but still have a few more to read from the stack.
