My Pellet review has returned! But will it be for the last time? In this case……yes.

Pellet Review

Cool Hand Uatu: (Nick Bertozzi) I like how we actually continue the story here and Uatu is in prison. The final page of this comic has a nice little joke to cap off the entire one page beginning.)

Oni: (Stan Sakai) First time I am ever seeing anything done by Stan Sakai. I hear great things about Usagi Yojimbo so it’s nice to see him get some exposure in the mainstream comics. I like his style of artwork, it kinda looks a bit cartoony but he adds a lot of adult elements to the story. The idea of Hulk being an Oni/Ronin is also a good idea. If anything this story makes me wanna start reading Usagi.

Longshot!: (Corey Lewis) I’m strangely attracted to this artwork for some reason. Its not like I’m a huge manga fan or anything; it’s just that this looks really cool to look. A lot of busy work with the panels and there is something going on in the backgrounds. Also a nice way of mixing techno with X-Men. All and all I thought of one thing with this story: Ron Richards is going to be gushing over it.

Fantastic Fool’s Day: (Jeffrey Brown) Hooray! Jeffrey Brown did a segment! Also, might have been the best of the bunch for this week. For some reason his style works well with the Fantastic Four, and the final couple of panels were hilarious. Ben seems to be acting like a child in this and for some reason that makes me laugh hysterically.

La Querelle Des Monstres: (Jay Stephens) I thought I recognized the artwork in this, he does the Tutenstein and Secret Saturday cartoons. I like Stephens artwork but I gotta admit, I was bored with the story. I didn’t get really the whole point of it all so it’s kinda forgettable.

Cupcake!: (Chris Cupa) Wow, what is going on here? In terms of studying art it’s very interesting.. You could look at this all day and still find new meanings with these panels. It’s a bit tough to get through the first time, but I really enjoyed the art in this.

The Abominable Peter Pepper!: (Max Cannon) Another ‘Lost’ story by Stan Lee and this is just as hysterical as the FF story. There’s just too many jokes to talk about in this little blurb; it’s just a great, quick parody. I hope Cannon does more of these in the future.

The Punisher: (Jonathan Jay Lee) Couldn’t get into this.

The Incorrigible Hulk: (Peter Bagge) I understand that the reason for this mini existing is because of this story. But I just couldn’t get down with this entire Hulk story. I like Bagge’s style, but his humor is nothing to really laugh at. Maybe I just need to read more of his work to appreciate it more.

Let’s Fight: (Michael Kupperman) Hey I remember this Kupperman guy! He did that hilarious android story from All-Selects Anniversary. This is just as funny as that and it has a great Hostess Fruit Pies spoof at the end.

Nightcrawler Meets Molecule Man: (Paul Hornschemeier) This story just seemed out of place for some reason. It just didnt feel right to put this into a mini with a lot of violence and comedy. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a decent enough story to read. But in the end I’m just left with, Why?

King Crab: (Becky Cloonan) A nice, cute story about a strange dream Reed Richards had. Highlights were Namor literally peeing in fear and Dr. Doom owing the rent. Nice artwork as well.

Other then the few little gems here, this is a bit of a weak ending for the mini. As a whole this was still one of the best things I’ve read this year for Marvel. But it seems like they lost a bit of steam at the end choosing some of the creators. So it’s a bit of a disappointing end but I hope Marvel continues this next year. It’s still a fun time to read even if this wasn’t the best issue out of the bunch.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
