The Pellet reviews return!
To Catch a Watcher!: (Nick Bertozzi) Yet another uncomfortable moment for us watching the Watcher....well watches She-Hulk. Love the design for a rabid Nick Fury.
The Invincible Iron Man: (Tony Millionare) Now this segment is, well it's down right crazy. Nothing about this makes any sense. It has Iron Man fight cold cuts with the name 'Baloney Head' and 'Liver-Wurst Face', then it suddenly turns into a parody on words, finally it ends with Stark getting a beat down by an image of Dwight D. Eisenhower. That is the best way I can explain this story, because it's so damn bizarre. But I like Tony Millionare as an artist (his worked turned into 'The Drinky Crow Show' on Adult Swim) and these are really cool designs. I would just love to know what his beef is with Eisenhower though...
Anything but Retail: (R. Kikuo Johnson) Just a series of adventures with Alicia Masters on getting a job. Maybe if your blind, the best idea is not to run a bakery shop, just saying. Ironically I recognize his artwork because he did 'Nickelodean Magazine' for awhile. Loved the colors in this and his overall retro style. Kinda reminded me of 'Ghost World' in a lot of ways.
Brother Voodoo in Death Rides a Five-Dollar Bag!: (Jim Rugg and Brian Marcua) Although Eisenhower doesn't make an appearence in this; this is just as bizarre as the Iron Man story. This is like an homage to both 60's comics and Black Exploitation films. This is just funny and has great retro art in this. Although with the Brother Voodoo ongoing out; I don't know if it's doing any favors to it.
M.O.D.O.K 'N' Me: (Jhonen Vasquez) A big surprise for me because I love Vasquez's work. (He did JTHM, Squee!, and Invader ZIM fyi) This is what you would expect from his imagination: A disturbing and violent comic M.O.D.O.K. is hilarious in this and the idea of the kid's head rotting all of those years is sick but also hilarious. The look on Dr. Doom's face is just so hysterical to me. Also, love the design of Fat Galactus and the final panel.
The Unfortunate Three!: (Max Cannon) Terrific spoof on the Fantastic Four origin. It's also an homage to Kirby's art and Cannon can certainly draw in his style. The idea that Reed was a drunk and them just watching Johnny burn alive is so funny to me. Of course this was an 'idea' by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby; so it's not really the FF. Still, it's a funny idea.
Lookin' Good. Mr. Grimm!: (Jacob Chabot) Cute story on Thing growning a mustache. This seems like something out of a cartoon or even Marvel Adventures comics. Also I love Plantman saying, "Oh Snap! It's the Fantastic Four!" This is the same guy who is doing 'G-Man' so I can imagine that is just as cute and kid friendly as this was.
The Incorrigible Hulk: (Peter Bagge) I believe this is the sole reason why this title was brought back. Because people love Bagge's work and this was dying to come out for years. I gotta say though, I find this the weakest of the stories. I know it's a continuing adventure but I just can't stand the art in this. Too busy for my liking.
Enlist Today: (Jonathan Hickman) All of the stories in this are great. But this is the sole reason this issue is my pick this week. Hickman doing a series of spoof campaign ads? Fantastic. Base those around Galactus and his Heralds? Again that's fantastic. Drawn by Hickman and looks like his 'Nightly News' comic? Brilliant! Seeing this in his own artwork and all of the little extras around the page is like porn to me. This is what I wanna see Hickman do more of in his Marvel books. I know he does it slightly in 'Secret Warriors', but I want a full blown comic look exactely like this. Best peice in the only comic, this is totally worth the price tag alone on these four pages.
The Black Widow: (Matt Kindt) Everyone also seems to be looking forward to this creator. He is a big time guy around these parts and I do have to say I like his style. Kinda like it's drawn with crayons to me, but still it looks pretty damn gorgeous. Kindt is good at spy stories so this is a natural for him apparently. Love to see more of his work.
Yet another fantastic collection of stories by indie writers. Hell I even got a bonus in this with seeing Millionare and Vasquez in this issue. I know the price tag is a worry for some, but you should go out and buy this. It's Marvels answer to 'Wednesday Comics' and brother; it is totally making me fall in love with these creators.
Art: 5 - Excellent
Nice review. My opinions differ on some stories, as I would hope. I liked the Iron Man story way more than the Johnen MODOK story, but I’m pretty sure our tastes are different.
Have you read anything by Matt Kindt before? If not, you need to check out Super Spy. It is incredible. Also, I think he mainly uses water color, at least that’s his trademark. It does give off that crayon-like vibe, though.
@Rusty: This is the first time I’ve ever laid eyes on Matt Kindt. I have heard great things for Super Spy and I will definitely give that trade a try. On second reading it does look like watercolor….but yeah it does feel like crayon doesnt it?
Yeah, it almost has that childlike quality to it, and I don’t mean it in a bad, sloppy way. My mind just lumps crayon and watercolor into the same category. It’s probably because both media are so closely associated with children’s art. It is refreshing to see somebody of Matt Kindt’s talent using tools that are most often abused by kids, including myself way back when.
I can’t even draw anything as remotely good with crayon/watercolor like Kindt can. So he’s better then me.
This is most likely very true. I met him at Windy City Con, and he is a very nice person. He’s probably also nicer than you… J/K, of course.
I often dream I was an artist. Is it too late to learn?
I’m sure it’s not too late. There’s so many people now that start a fantastic career at an older age. Just try your best and keep going even if it’s a rough couple of years before breaking through.
The Hickman Galactus ads had me weeping with joy. I mean TEARS OF LAUGHTER!!! TEARS OF LAUGHTER!!!
Most of these stories were actually finished three to five years ago, so the Brother Voodoo thing is total coincidence, but interesting.
All in all, I loved this book.
