I love Stephen King books, I love them. I wasnt a huge fan of the Dark Tower series however until the comic came out. After reading that wonderful first mini I was tempted to read as much as the Dark Tower as I could. All of those books are a great epic, riviling up with LOTR in my mind. When I got word that a mini-series from The Stand was going to take place, I was really hoping for big things here.

Alright so the Stand isnt my all time favorite King novel. But this was a nice, soild first issue bringing us the world of this book before the big holocaust. We’re introduced to a lot of the people that will play big parts in this comic and the overall book. Although I wish I saw Randall Flagg in this issue, I’m sure he’ll play a big part in the coming issues. The art is smooth and very detailed, maybe not so much as the Dark Tower comics are. I mean let’s face it, those mini’s have some of the best art around. But Perkins definitely does a good job making this look real and all the characters have uniqueness to them.

Overall this was a enjoyable 1st issue and nothing more. It’s hard to judge where this is gonna go and how far this will actually go into the real book. But Stephen King just seems to work well in comics. As of right now he’s 2 for 2 in my eyes when it comes to his stories. Maybe this is where he should’ve went to instead of making crappy films about his works.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Just curious … how well would this comic work for someone who hasn’t read the novel?

  2. @Aero: This would work quite well for someone who hasnt read the book. Hell I read the book and I dont remember a thing….then again it was a loooong book. But that shouldnt detract you from reading it. Hell if you read all the Dark Tower books and spin-offs, you got something longer then the Lord of the Rings trilogy!

But to answer your question, this is perfect for someone who’s new to the King Universe. This takes place seemingly days before the outbreak and a lot of the characters in here are from the book. So yeah, pick it up if your a newbie.
