Siege firmly declares itself as the culmination of a number of major events in recent Marvel history. This in itself has positive and negative ramifications.
The positive: it adds gravitas to the story and brings it into a greater continuity to reach towards something epic. The negative: a lot of the previous events were disappointing for various reasons (both within their own runs or the way they were handled after they ended, I'm looking at you Civil War on both counts) and this puts pressure on BMB to blow the reader away beyond just the opening issue of a mini-series.
By placing Siege in the context of the previous events not only does Bendis have to entertain, he has to entertain enough to reassure the reader this isn't going to be the crappy last issue of Civil War, the interminable Savage Land dross of Secret Invasion or the ridiculous handling of the Spider-Man unmasking.
With such a large task, Bendis decides to come out swinging with mass carnage, St. Crispin's day speeches and super heroes throwing down.
Unfortunately there isn't enough character development to make me care about what is actually happening.
The devastation of Soldier Field should be gut-wrenching, but it isn't. Perhaps the device of having it played out by Loki from afar lessens the impact. Perhaps the way in which the slaughter arrives so suddenly and then is left behind so quickly doesn't give the reader the time to dwell. Perhaps relying on an Asgardian acting like a huge moron and then having the reader believe that noone spotted the bland and convenient energy weilders attacking him even though they are standing on top of a bloody football stadium undercuts the gravitas.
Not only are these garishly glowing non-entities (I honestly have no clue who they are) apparently invisible to the human eye and every camera in Chicago, but they are suddenly so integral to Norman's cadre that he is wince-inducingly dumb enough to have them stand next to him as he is taking down Thor on worldwide television.
Norman is crazy (it is getting to the point he should be in Lethal Weapon 5 with Sentry standing next to him saying "I'm getting too old for this shit"), but is he that dumb? And remember the reason that Osborn is waging this war in the first place is that the Asgardian God of Mischief has told him it is a good idea. That and he had a conversation with his old mask because he is crazy. Norman. Crazy. Crazy Norman.
By the way, the drama of having everyone's favourite thunder god beaten up with convenient ease is undermined by the view from afar, this time from the television cameras as we are told that he is down, not shown him being put down. This could be a bait and switch as it just didn't feel right that Thor would lose.
He just gave Sentry a well-deserved hammering then he gets beaten up by Sub Par Iron Man and the glow stick gang? It doesn't seem to add up.
Then again lots of things don't add up.
Ares' capitulation makes no sense, he views the Asgardians as equals and warriors he respects and values, which is more than he can say about most of his new comrades. He himself questions Norman's motives enough to threaten to kill him if he isn't telling the truth but doesn't bother checking anything out he just starts making plans (which brilliantly we don't get the scoop on due to Marvel having a printing issue) like a good little God and gets to make a nice rousing speech.
I know Ares is a God of War and is impulsive, but he is also a master tactician and is duped with ridiculous and overly convenient ease.
The push to get the battle going seems to override any thought of whether the story is making sense along the way and each time something feels forced or too easy or even illogical it just takes me out of the story and leaves me cold.
As an opening to an event, Siege #1 is clumsy and too forced to be enjoyable, an example of writing to a plan instead of writing to a story.
