After raving about the first issue of this new series, my initial excitement began to wane. With this second issue I think it’s safe to say that as it is currently going, this series is not doing it for me.

There’s nothing in this book that I can’t get from any number of supernatural-horror/adventure books already being published by Dark Horse or IDW. For example, Colder #2 from Dark Horse, which also came out this week, was the same price but had way better art, expressive pencils, a painterly colouring style, and a much more creepy and intriguing story.

I was hoping that Justin Jordan would be bringing the same level of over-the-top action and energy to this book as in his Luther Strode series, but he’s not. I would describe Patrick Zircher’s art as pretty good, but not exceptional.

There’s still nothing in this second issue which is as good as the first 5 pages of #1, which leads me to believe that Zircher’s an artist who needs more lead time to really develop out the beautiful pages. I don’t think people would be praising his art this much if it were in a Marvel book.

Shadowman might need time to differentiate itself from books like The Darkness, Spawn, and similar supernatural-adventure books, but my attention is hard to maintain and I don’t have time for stories that are “just okay” when there are so many other quality comic books to read.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Yeah, after reading issue #1 I felt how you feel. Nothing worth my $4. Nothing new, nothing that really reminded me of the old shadowman I loved, and these monster things were kinda “hoky”. I’m sure this series could be cool, I kinda liked the dwarf guy and the parent backstory, but it just wasn’t cool. Trying too hard maybe?? Anyways, thanks for the review, you just saved me $4. Appreciate it. It does have a really cover though.

  2. I didn’t think it was that bad. I’ll give it another issur or two.

    • I don’t want to give the impression that it was terrible, because it wasn’t. It was just okay. The art was pretty good, but the story was completely average. There’s not really anything to distinguish this book from other titles like it, and I’m a little let down because I was hoping that Justin Jordan would be bringing the same energy to this book as Luther Strode and Team 7, but it’s not there. Shadowman should be firing on all cylinders but once again, Valiant is going for the decompressed approach. I’m happy to see Valiant breathe new life into Harbinger, but the other books need to step it up a bit.
