I’m going to try to do this without spoilers in order that people who are not yet reading this book might be so inclined to read this “safe” review, and be encouraged that they should jump on now, as they’ve been missing one of the absolute best books DC is putting out on a monthly basis.  Here’s what you need to know: the team is in Gotham City and, thanks to the new status quo, it is now a city without Batman.  Two of the team members, Catman (a former fat, slovenly, D-list at best bad guy now improbably transformed into the almost overly competent favorite character of the writer, thanks to the untimely slaughter of the pride of lions he was living with) and Bane (famous Batman back-breaker, now having sworn off the Venom that formerly powered him and having recently developed a very strong and often hilarious paternal instinct in regards to de-facto team leader Scandal Savage) both feel they have a right to bid for “the Cowl”… but they won’t admit it out loud, yet deeply accuse the one another of this fact.  At the same time, another team member, Ragdoll (androgynous, masochistic, obsessive-compulsive, contortionist, sexually depraved and self-professed team “freak”) decides he wants to be Robin, embracing it fully with costume and corny, presumably unintentionally perverted dialogue.  As they attempt to both out-hero one another while simultaneously undermining the other’s effort via this series’ trademark verbal jabs, we’re treated to a story filled with action and nearly non-stop dark humor.  Even better, this is a one-and-done issue which is not only incredibly endearing (as this has always been a strongly character-driven book), but a perfect jumping-on point.  Again, if you aren’t reading this book, you are missing out on something great.

  1. Great review!  The last two issues of Secret Six have been amazing.  Hopefully, more people will start picking it up.  Now…to my Bat-pole!
