I made Secret Six my POTW this week, and I think it's one of the best comic books I have read in months.
A plot to kidnap the children of three wealthy Gotham industrialists is the device that draws in Catman, Bane and Ragdoll to heroically rescue the kids in a typically brutal and unheroic way.
Whilst the team-members dispatch the three gangs of kidnappers, their banter allows us a glimpse into some deep, nuanced characterisation; Bane's skewed sense of morality & honour that will not allow him to ignore a child kidnaping plot, but allows him to decapitate the perpitrator without a second thought, and chide them for their poor planning; Ragdoll is played for laughs through the whole story - weird, perverted laughs; Catman plays the straight-man role through much of the book, but his final tirade against DC's heroes gets to the very core of the character - indeed to the heart of the whole series.
Then there is the humour. I laughed out loud so many times during the reading of this book; Bane's anxiety when cradling the toddler, Ragdoll relishing his role as the Boy/Girl Wonder, and the homage to Adam West's Batman TV show as they scale the wall are just three stand out moments. If Giffen-era JLA was the club where heroes went to let their hair down, Secret Six serves the same role for the DC villains.
Gail SImone writes a corker of a book here; it may only relate to the Batman continuity tangentially, but she manages to show what regard and respect Batman was held in, even by these D-list villains. Nicola Scott's art is as crisp, clear and dynamic as ever, and Jason Wright's colours are just gorgeous (especially the firelit library scene).
There hasn't been a duff issue of this book, and I would strongly recommend anyone to give it a go. This single issue story would be a great place to begin.
