Well, in the first issue of this massive event, we saw SHIELD completely destroyed, Iron Man on the fritz, the Baxter Building ate itself, the T-Bolts got theirs, Reed got shot in the face, the Avengers facing... the Avengers, and an entire Skrull armada facing down Earth.
How do you top it with the next issue? Well... you don't. If you were looking for Bendis to keep the pace at the fever pitch it was last issue, you might just want to skip out on Secret Invasion #2. Where the two tie-ins have been all exposition and little action, this was all action and little progression. What you have here is basically three parts: the fight, the post fight banter, and the set-up in New York for later. Again, in some ways, a lot went on and in others, not much happened.
The issue picks up in the Savage Land where they left off last time. Basically, the cast from Marvel 1975 pops out of the downed ship and confront the current Avengers. Right away, Ares has a sudden moment of clarity for once and asserts the team must retreat from this fight and flee as this is clearly a trap. Ares then shows a moment of wisdom and honor and declares he'll hold off the Skrulls as they get back to the mainland and stop the REAL invasion. It's a really good character moment... that gets completely shattered by Luke Cage who declares "The heck with good battle plans! I wanna whoop some a$$!!!!!" and the entire grounds explodes in conflict. Sigh. So, basically, the God of War just declared this a pointless and distracting fight that is meant to keep the Avengers trapped in the Savage Land, but Cage wants to fight, so we fight. That's annoying.
And now it's official. You could give me ten seconds of talk, and even I can remove Sentry from a fight. I swear, he hears "The contract was been made void" and he'll freak out and fly away. I can't believe after three years, this guy is STILL this passive-aggressive nutball who can't tie his shoelaces without freaking over whether it'll blow up the universe or not. I really hope this guy is a Skrull so I never see him again. Yeesh.
Oh, and their Cap might be the right Cap, according to Clint. Yeah, and Al Gore invented the internet.
Meanwhile, Tony and Carol have vacated the fight with Carol bringing Tony to Brainchild's lab (I think). After Tony reiterates Ares' little nugget of common sense (See? The resident genius thought staying and fighting was foolish, too!), he declares he's going to start from scratch and do what the Skrulls can't mimic: he's going to use his brain. Hopefully, this turns out good. I rag on Bendis for a lot of things, but he does give Tony his due respect, so I anticipate what Tony's cooking up for the Skrulls.
Meanwhile, the teams wade through the post fight field. Spider-Skrull and Hawk-Skrull are dead, and, in the most asinine moment of the series so far, Ronin decides Mockingbird is real based a small anecdote that frankly the Skrulls could have figured out through a million other options besides the one revealed last week. Even if Clint was a Skrull and trying to get more Skrulls in, that was the stupidest thing ever. Clint should really know better. Oh, and more "Cap am real!" stuff by Mockingbird. Bleh.
Last but not least, we head back to New York where the Young Avengers witness the Baxter vanish into nothing. Then, suddenly, a Skrull ship touches down and Super Skrulls of every power and color finish out the issue. One has to ask though... what's up with the outfits? Do the Skrulls actually take the time to fashion outfits mimicking the subjects they based their powers on? I suppose they're letting us know what kind of Skrulls they are but the lack of internal logic is staggering in this case.
This was very much a disappointment to me. After a jaw dropping first issue, this one just pales by comparison. This was really a non-entity issue for me There's too many irrational moments and it feels like we're now dragging until the big beats play out. Hopefully, things will pick back up in issue 3.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
I agree with most of your comments on this one Tork. It definitely lost some momentum. There was some really good character moments in this, and a part of me is really excited to see the Young Avengers get back into action. But, yeah, the story just kind of meander and the fight was cool, but nothing different from what we’ve been reading in New Avengers for the last six months.
I do want to point out that Yu’s art was very good, so I’m curious why you gave it a 3?
Excellent review, Tork. I’m with Neb in liking the art. In fact, I think it was the saving grace of the issue. It was the only thing that kept this from being a 2 minute read.
Your comments on the Sentry are spot-on. Marvel has to get rid of this guy. No one knows what to do with this guy, so they just remove him from every fight. It would have been interesting to see the fight take to the skies with a one on one between The Sentry and the The Phoenix, but instead Vision just had to give him a strong talking-to.
Logic or not… I thought the super-skrull outfits were pretty cool. Especially the Colossus/Wolverine/Cyclops guy…
Eh, I thought it was good, but it didn’t wow me. I’m mostly bothered by those garish Skrull Hybrid outfits at the end. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either.
I definitely agree with a bunch of your points. While I enjoyed the book for what it was (splash pages), I was really ticked when I realized it was 3.99. I don’t think there were any extra pages….so did I pay extra just because its a high profile book? If so, at least give me a skrull reveal or something (and I mean someone from the actual marvel u…not just the people that just showed up…)
The Super-Skrull outfits WERE cool. And as for Cage fighting even when the god of war says not to… perhaps Cage is a Skrull?
@nroa~ The $3.99 is because it’s a high profile event book. Usually, these books also have better quality paper, coloring, covers, etc. which also makes them expensive.
I agree completely with this review. I think the moment with Ares was the key point where the story turns mediocre. I would have liked it so much more if they listened to Ares, or even if there was just less emphasis on the fight and something about what the hell was going on with shield and sword at that point.
@ Doc Hess, I disagree with you about sentry. I don’t think he has to be gotten rid of, he just has to stop being such a baby. If he fought phoenix like you suggested, that would have been cool. Or if vision tried the void thing, and Sentry just rocked in the face or something.
I probably wouldn’t be mourning the loss of characters who weren’t workin, but I rather have the skrull reveals be ones where you go "Good Lord!" and "what does this mean to the Marvel U" than reveals that make you say "okay, we finally got rid of that jerk". I like the school of thought that says fix that bad charachters, break the good ones.
oops, meant *rocked him in the face
…as in punched that dude right in his face.
@Neb: Deal, but I still don’t have to like it…haha
I agree that this was underwhelming, but I also found this issue tantalizing. There are many who would argue that Al Gore did invent the internet, in the same way that Bill Gates invented DOS – creating the financial situation that allowed those things to be. From that view, one might hope or pray that this is indeed the real Cap. However, if that were to be true, then the body of the recently assassinated Cap would have to be Skrull – right?
