I’ve been adamant that this has been the best Avengers title out of the dozens that have come out. It has been a lot of to read over the past six issues and it definitely seemed to have brought back some spark in Ed Brubaker’s writing. But even I have to admit that sometimes the ‘best’ can’t dish it out every single issue.

It might’ve been the pacing, or the art in this, or maybe the actual plot it self. I don’t know. I do know that I found myself to be a little bit bored of what was going on in this issue. Pretty much nothing happens from page one to the incredibly ‘bullshit’ of an ending for the final page. Oh sure some good action sequences happen; like Ant-Man going gigantic or Valkyrie showing her stuff. But other then that? It was kinda dull to be honest. I mean it’s not even a bad issue in any way, it was just….there. It definitely feels like padding to get to the next issue if I could be any more clearer.

Also, I really have liked Mike Deodato on this title even with Aja/Lark coming in. I could handle the obvious digital effects in here but only up to a point. There are some really freaky character designs in here and at some points Rogers doesn’t even look like himself. Again when the action picks up, it’s a lot of fun to look at. But in general there is nothing really to write home about with this.

So while there are some good action sequences in this title, I do have to say this could be the worst the series has had to offer at this point. Brubaker and Deodato was on a good high up to this point. So seeing him crash a bit here is a bit of a letdown. Still, I gotta think that this is still one of the better titles Marvel has going right now. Just a shame that we could’ve had more to the table then just padding for next month’s.

Story: 3 - Good

  1. I more or less agree with your review.  This story arc is basicaly a continuation of the serpent crown story that Brubaker began in issue #1, he just keeps adding complications.  I wish Brubaker would tighten up the writing, and get to the point.
