As a writer known for crafting intriguing crime and espionage drama in books like Captain America and Batman, Brubaker should be the perfect man to pen the heroic age’s book Secret Avengers, a team whose entire idea is based upon the fact that they are an underground team who deals with threats under the radar. Unfortunately, that is not the case here. As seen in Secret avengers #5, Brubaker has the talent and drive to make this book shine, but unfortunately, the first arc, and the beginning of the second have felt rushed and sloppy. Deodato’s art has only detracted from the story. His awkward figures and unorthodox storytelling methods shy in comparison to the work done by David Aja, Michael Lark, and Stefano Guadiano in the previous issue, if that artistic trio, or even one of them were to take over the book, I would be much more inclined and excited for each issue. Brubaker has good ideas, but seems to be carrying them out in a way that is not seen in his early issues on Captain America, but I know that the story ideas are there, they just need to be refined and, with the inclusion of a more appropriate artist, this book could become one of Marvel’s best.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. I didn’t think the first arc was bad, just ok.  It does appear to be part of a bigger story that is still unfolding.  Gotta love the image of Commander America and Black Widow shimmying down elevator cables together, though.
