I'm only a slight way through my stack and it's already an excellent week for Marvel Comics. This latest standalone issue is the perfect example of exactly that. While I long for the long form Ellis of old (i.e. Transmet and Stormwatch) this is still a very good use of his talent to jump into an established book and unearth exactly what could be awesome about it. He hits on the initial espionage pitch of Secret Avengers, infuses it with a rotating cast and a similarity to his Global Frequency series and we are off to the races. Steve and Sharon travel with Shang Chi to an Escher inspired Shadow Council base to retrieve a superweapon and fight with an Arnim Zola copy. That's all it is, and yet it's a thing of beauty just the same. The script is pithy, the plot is sleek and zips along, primarily from cool fight to cool fight.
However fun all this is though, it would be nothing without David Aja. He's one of my absolute favourites since Iron Fist, but his talent can't keep up with a monthly. Which makes it a special treat when his work turns up in perfect little packages like this. His Shang Chi is Bruce Lee all the way and a large number of the panels in this book show him fighting Shadow Council troops, sometimes alone and sometimes with Steve and Sharon. Everything else is primarily the exposition to link these fight scenes. But that's inconsequential as it's just so damn glorious. There's this insane sense of detail conveyed through minimal lines. Just look at the positioning of Shang Chi's stance in the first scene, right down to his fingers, it's amazing and worth just slowing down and taking your time.
There's one or two issues of this run to go I think and I must admit I was thinking of stopping there. Thing is, I think Remender and Hardman can follow this really well and probably even match it with something different but just as good. It had a rocky start, but this is a title with a strong and vital second life.

I couldn’t get to my shop today – but tomorrow – ah tomorrow. Aja killed it on “Debt of Death”, and this is going to be great – even with a cover that looks like a “Shadowland” tie in. (And I mean that in the worst possible way.)
I’ll consider the Remender/Hardman run the THIRD life of this book.
