So comes an end to an…..well apparently I can’t say era anymore so…..Let’s start over.
So comes an end to Ed Brubaker’s ‘fun’ Avengers book. A year ago I wanted nothing to do with any Avengers book after the slog that was Siege. But Brubaker seemed to hit the right points with this book by taking away the boring buracuracy part of the team and let the punches do the talking. It hasn’t been a perfect run mind you, mostly because of the so-so art by Mike Deodato. But I’m still pretty upset by this end, especially since Brubaker is hinting at something big to come at the end.
While last issue seemed to be nothing more then a huge fight during WWII. This issue brings some revelation of John Walker and how it’s going to effect the team for a while. I like it when Brubaker adds some mystical elements to his stories and this is no different. One moment we see Walker getting tortured by mystics, the next we see Cap fighting a huge worm monster in Germany. If that isn’t fun then I don’t know what is. The only problem I had with this was that it seem to end a bit too soon. Once we go to the end I felt we still had a few more pages to go. But no, it’s the end.
That’s really all I can say. I mean the art is pretty good by Will Conrad but at the end of the day I’m pretty depressed. Brubaker is leaving this book right at the height of the storyline. What is the Shadow Concil? What the hell happened to John Walker? Why can’t we have more Cap fighting space worms? Stuff that will never be shown or answered at this point. Hell Spencer’s run is just a Fear Itself tie-in so I doubt he’ll have time to explore these mysterious next month. It’s a shame, this book ends right when it got really interesting. Seems to be a theme with most Marvel books these days.
