I’m sorry to say but I am done. Maybe it is the timing and maybe it is just my sensitivity. Scarlet is a story about a girl and her boyfriend who were killed by crooked cops. She then retaliates by killing several police officers. The story goes on to glamorize her stand while showing that it has real world consequences.

I know this is fiction but here is the thing. I am a cop. An honest, hard working cop who has put in 18 years on the streets of a small town in Oregon. I know a fair amount of Portland Cops. Two of which have died in the line of duty. Last weekend, 11 officers were shot in a 48 hour period. Many of those died. The week prior I went to the funeral of a small town police chief who was killed with his own gun. These were good cops gunned down for no reason. I know that is not the story but… It is too close to home.

I’m done with this one. I love Bendis’ writing style. I love the art. I know this is a well written story that will take us some where new. I just can’t stay on for the ride.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I felt much the same with this issue; I really enjoyed the first two, but if the next one doesn’t WOW me then I’m done. It just feels like it’s being angry for anger’s sake.

  2. It is definitely a bit crazy anti-cop right now. From Bendis’ comments I get the sense this is on purpose and he is going somewhere with it, but right now it is starting to grate. All police in Portland are evil is a bit much to take.
