Scarlet is easily one of the most hyped and anticipated books of the year. The word was on the street, in the jinx message boards and all over the Bendis tapes. I was in the shop and I figured I’d give this comic a whirl. There isn’t alot to complain about in this book. The writing is solid, the title character is very clever and pretty original. Maleev’s art is delightfully gritty and the color faded and suits the feel of the book famously.
I’m going to need a bit more time to decide if I like the breaking of the forth wall. I think it is an interesting experiment, but I’m not sure it worked for me. I mean, when the main character talks to the audience in a film, tv show, or even a stage play it works better than it seems to in the comic. I found it hard to suspend my disbelieve and I wondered if the other people in the comic could hear Scarlet talking to herself or is there another character in the universe that the reader is supposed to represent.
I’d say, overall, this comic did not disappoint. It’s a good introduction to a series with some pretty breathtaking art. Bendis tried something new and even if it didn’t altogether work for me I applaud him doing it. I don’t think this is the best of the week but this comic is definitely worth your attention.

Story: 4 - Very Good
