I’ll admit I was pretty upset when I saw this as the Pick of the Week. I’ve been looking forward to Blackest Night forever and when I read it and it lived up to expectations, I was pretty surprised to see them go with this. I love Scalped and I’ve been reading these issues, but it seemed unlikely that this issue could be better than such a great event book. With that as a backdrop, I almost had a grudge against this book before even I read it. This book definitely delivered though. Throughout this series, it’s had this great western noir feel of dread where everything gets worse for Bad Horse with every issue and this issue captured that perfectly. This issue has set up a situation like in High Noon, where you know the bad guys are coming and you know it’s going to be bad. Jason Aaron continues to add depth and make every issue build tension while at the same time delivering payoffs. This was a really good issue, definitely a 5 but I still think Blackest Night was still better. I guess I should just be glad there wasn’t a GI Joe book out this week they could pick.
