Like most humans, I was very excited about this — until I read it. The opening scene lost me with its discordant, jagged styles playing against one another. You have magic, technology, humans, robots, aliens, and monsters all playing in the same sandbox, and they all speak like they live in Santa Monica. After one issue, I have no idea what this is supposed to be other than a mishmash of twelve concepts that have no room to breathe. I expect way more from Vaughan than this. Also, while competently rendered, I can’t say I have much affection for Fiona Staples linework.

  1. Just a guess that you’ll be pretty lonely in your opinion on this website. Looks like a lovefest for this book.

  2. I agree with this review although I think that I would have given both the art and the story a “3.” The thing that I liked least about it is that it is being narrated by the baby. The art is only “OK” in my opinion. I have seen better. I loved the fact that the comic was large and still was only 2.99. The cover was cool too.

  3. I’m glad I’m not the only one to feel underwhelmed by this book. Such a shame, because I really wanted to love it.

  4. I generally agree with this review, but if I could split hairs I’d give it more like a 2.5 or 2.75, rather than just a 2.

This IS an above-average comic. But it just isn’t THAT great.

Then again, I never thought Y was as super fantastic as most others on this site seem to have thought. In general I think BKV has good ideas, but his actual characterizations always seem kind of vapid to me. Even characters who are supposed to be smart or dignified come off as somehow shallow.

There are some exceptions (Ex Machina, SOME issues of Y), but in general I think that once you get passed the initial “cool idea!” face-value reaction, BKV’s work doesn’t have that much substance to it.

  5. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Staples art doesn’t always appeal to me (I completely agree with your opinion on her line work), and fantasy has to be written really well for me to get on board. I am cautiously on board for this.

I’m just glad that this website allows for user reviews like this that reflect the very reasonable sentiments of people who don’t necessarily fall in with the prevailing opinion.

I also like that you know how to write a review that isn’t just a synopsis. I look forward to reading more of them.
